UK employees lead Europe in AI workplace adoption
UK employees are embracing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to boost workplace productivity and innovation, with one in four now using them daily, according to a new study by Freshworks. The survey, which involved over 4,000 full-time employees globally, including 1,500 from the UK, Germany, and France, shows a significant shift in attitudes towards AI in the workplace.
The research highlights the UK's leading role in adopting AI compared to its European neighbours. While 25% of UK employees use AI tools every day, only 15% of German employees and 18% of French employees report the same. Nearly half (46%) of UK respondents use AI tools weekly, suggesting widespread integration into work routines.
Improved understanding and trust in AI tools
Freshworks' survey found that trust in AI tools among UK employees has grown throughout 2024. Half of the respondents confirmed their confidence had increased, with 53% citing a better understanding of AI as the primary reason. Other factors contributing to improved trust include AI tools delivering noticeable value (48%) and performing more effectively (46%).
Despite initial scepticism, over half (52%) of UK employees now describe themselves as "knowledgeable" or "experts" in AI, reflecting the growing confidence in using these technologies. By comparison, Germans were most likely to consider themselves AI experts (58%) but reported lower daily use than their UK counterparts.
AI's role in reshaping work
The study also explored how AI is impacting workflows and employee experiences. Nearly two-thirds (65%) of UK employees believe AI should focus on automating repetitive or mundane tasks. Many reported that AI has allowed them to dedicate more time to enjoyable activities (40%) and improved their engagement at work (36%).
Contrary to fears about job displacement, most respondents (60%) understand that AI is not eliminating jobs but shifting responsibilities. Employees appear to value the collaboration between AI tools and human expertise, particularly for tasks requiring creativity and interpersonal interactions.
Preserving the human element in work
While AI adoption is increasing, UK employees remain cautious about delegating tasks that require a human touch. Actions such as resolving workplace conflicts or interacting with customers are still considered best handled by people. This perspective underscores the balance many employees and businesses are striving to maintain: leveraging AI for efficiency while preserving the uniquely human elements of work.
AI skills driving employability and success
Looking ahead, AI skills are becoming a priority for both employers and employees. Over half (52%) of UK companies now consider AI expertise essential for promotions, and 63% are investing in training programmes to upskill their workforce. For employees, mastering AI tools is seen as a way to enhance employability, with 20% already recognised for achievements linked to AI use.
The survey also shows that UK employees are significantly more confident in using AI tools than their European peers, with 60% feeling at ease compared to 45% in Germany and 42% in France. This confidence could position the UK workforce as more adaptable in an AI-driven job market.
Looking to the future
As businesses prepare for 2025, the study suggests that AI will be critical for maintaining competitiveness and fostering innovation. With 60% of UK companies identifying AI as necessary for success, there is a growing focus on integrating these technologies to improve productivity and resilience.
Freshworks' findings highlight how UK organisations and employees are embracing AI to transform the workplace, positioning themselves for long-term growth in an increasingly technology-driven landscape.
