Vertex has appointed Chatelle Lynch as Chief People Officer, Carlos Mercuriali as Senior Vice President and Regional Manager of Europe, and Bala Chandran as Chief Product and Technology Officer, expanding the tax and compliance software group's senior leadership team.

The hires come as companies face a more demanding indirect tax environment, particularly in Europe, where e-invoicing mandates, real-time reporting rules and broader compliance requirements are changing how businesses manage transactions and reporting.

Lynch joins Vertex after senior people leadership roles at The RealReal and McAfee. She brings more than 20 years of experience in organisational strategy and will lead the company's global people and culture efforts as the business scales.

Mercuriali joins from Avalara, where he most recently served as Senior Vice President and General Manager, International. His background spans the United States, Latin America and EMEA. He will oversee Vertex's European business, including regional strategy, customer relationships, partnerships and go-to-market activity.

Chandran brings more than 25 years of experience in technology and artificial intelligence roles at Amazon and Oracle, most recently as Senior Vice President at Oracle Health. At Vertex, he will lead product management, engineering, information security and emerging technology.

Compliance pressure

The reshaping of tax administration has become a major issue for software providers serving multinational groups. Governments have expanded digital reporting systems and e-invoicing frameworks, pushing businesses to adapt finance and tax processes more quickly and with less room for manual intervention.

The shift has also created an opening for vendors that can help large companies manage tax determination, invoicing, reporting and filing across multiple jurisdictions. More than 60% of the Fortune 500 use Vertex's services.

The latest leadership changes also reflect a broader effort to strengthen management across operations, product development and regional execution. Vertex recently added Allison Cerra as Chief Marketing Officer and Aneel Jaeel as Chief Operations Officer.

Headquartered in North America, with offices in South America and Europe, Vertex focuses on indirect tax and compliance processes across the transaction lifecycle. Its products cover tax determination, e-invoicing, reporting, filing and audit defence.

AI focus

Chandran's appointment comes as Vertex continues its shift toward software as a service and an AI-first operating model. The move mirrors a wider trend in enterprise software, where providers are embedding AI into workflow, compliance and analytics tools while managing tighter regulatory scrutiny.

For Vertex, combining product, engineering and information security under a single executive suggests closer alignment between software development and compliance demands. In regulated areas such as tax technology, companies are under pressure to improve automation without weakening control over reporting and documentation.

Mercuriali's remit in Europe places one of the new hires in a region where digital tax controls have advanced quickly. Several countries have introduced or expanded continuous transaction controls, forcing businesses to submit invoice data and transaction records to tax authorities on much shorter timelines.

Those policy changes have increased demand for systems that can integrate tax and invoicing requirements into everyday business operations. Providers in the sector have responded by expanding local coverage, cross-border support and links with finance and enterprise software.

Lynch's role points to another challenge for software groups: recruiting and retaining staff during periods of operational change. Companies balancing international growth, product shifts and heavier customer requirements often need to adjust internal structures and hiring plans at the same time.

Christopher Young, Chief Executive Officer of Vertex, linked the three appointments to changes in the market facing its customers.

"Our customers are navigating a period of significant change, from the expansion of e-invoicing mandates and real-time compliance requirements to increasing pressure to perform more efficiently and intelligently," Young said.

"As we continue to scale globally and transform as an AI-first company, Chatelle, Carlos and Bala bring the leadership, operating experience and technical depth needed to strengthen our impact for customers and support long-term growth," he added.
