Barclaycard Payments has deployed Visa's Unified Checkout for its UK merchant customers, embedding the product into its Smartpay Fuse gateway.

The move extends a long-running relationship between the two payments groups and gives merchants a single integration for a wider range of payment methods and related services.

Merchants using Smartpay Fuse will be able to offer card payments, Click to Pay and digital wallets through the integration. It also supports options such as Pay by Link and invoicing.

Visa says the product is designed to reduce the development work needed when merchants add new ways for customers to pay online. Its API-based structure allows merchants to update payment options as customer preferences change.

For merchants, the aim is to cut the number of separate integrations needed to manage online checkout. Bringing different payment experiences into one setup could also create a more consistent process for customers across sales channels.

The agreement comes as merchants face a more fragmented online payments market, with consumers using a wider mix of cards, wallets and alternative payment methods. Payments providers have increasingly sought to simplify that complexity for businesses, particularly mid-sized and growing merchants that may not have large in-house development teams.

The addition to Smartpay Fuse is intended to help merchants manage that shift without repeated changes to their checkout systems. Visa describes the product as a way for acquirers and merchants to adopt new payment features as they emerge.

"As payments evolve, we want to make it easier for merchants to tap into new innovation without having to rebuild their checkout each time. Our Unified Checkout solution helps acquirers and their merchants offer payments to everyone, everywhere with ease. Together with Barclaycard Payments, we're supporting merchants to futureproof their checkout by giving them access to what's next as it happens," Dan Parsons, Head of Value Added Services, Visa UK & Ireland, said.

Barclaycard Payments says the integration is intended to streamline payment acceptance while giving merchants broader oversight of checkout options in one place. It is also meant to respond to changing customer expectations around how people choose to pay online.

"More choice is generally a good thing, but in payments it can quickly become overwhelming for growing businesses. By bringing Visa's Unified Checkout solution into Smartpay Fuse, we're helping merchants simplify payment acceptance through streamlined processes and a single, future-ready integration that strengthens security, improves visibility and adapts to evolving customer expectations. By combining multiple payment experiences into one solution, we're enabling businesses to deliver more seamless customer journeys, unlock growth opportunities and focus on what matters most, while reinforcing Barclaycard Payments' commitment to being a trusted partner that helps merchants grow with confidence," said Ben Stagg, Head of Mid-Corporate at Barclaycard Payments.
