LaCie Rugged SSD4 offers pro durability & speed for creators

Tue, 16th Sep 2025

Seagate Technology has released the LaCie Rugged SSD4, a portable solid-state drive designed for creative professionals seeking high performance and durability while working outside traditional studio environments.

The LaCie Rugged SSD4 is aimed at filmmakers, photographers, and audio professionals in need of reliable data storage that can withstand challenging conditions. The external drive supports transfer speeds of up to 4,000MB/s for reading and 3,800MB/s for writing, providing the bandwidth required for handling large video, photo, or audio files in demanding formats.

The device features a USB 40Gbps port, supporting rapid file transfers and enabling users to work directly off the drive across various operating systems and devices, including Mac, iPad, PCs, and mobile phones.

"Everyone can be a creator now, not just photo and video professionals. In the age of AI and ultra-high-resolution formats like ProRes 4K, fast and durable local storage is more important than ever. Whether you're editing on the go or archiving footage for future use, storage becomes a strategic asset in your creative workflow," said Avi Greengart, President and Lead Analyst at Techsponential.

Durability is a key feature of the LaCie Rugged SSD4. The drive's casing is rated IP54 for dust and water resistance, withstanding adverse conditions during location shoots or outdoor work. It has also been tested to survive drops of up to three metres, helping to minimise the risk of hardware failure due to accidental knocks or falls. The device retains LaCie's distinctive orange bumper, designed by Neil Poulton, which has become a visual hallmark for their rugged drives.

Storage options range up to 4TB, enabling the drive to accommodate substantial volumes of high-resolution video or audio content. The compact form factor is intended for professionals who need a portable storage option that fits easily into camera bags or backpacks while protecting creative assets on the move.

LaCie notes its commitment to sustainability in the SSD4's construction, with a minimum of 35% of the product's weight made up of post-consumer recycled materials. Additional value is provided through software and support services, such as a two-month Adobe Creative Cloud Pro membership and a three-year limited warranty including Rescue Data Recovery Services, which offer recovery options for lost or corrupted files.

Compatibility with a wide range of protocols contributes to the drive's flexibility. The SSD4 supports USB 40Gbps, USB 20Gbps, and USB 10Gbps, as well as Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, and Thunderbolt 5 connections, ensuring it can be integrated into diverse workflows and systems. It is also compatible with USB-C iPhones capable of shooting ProRes 4K at 120fps, facilitating fast file offloads and mobile editing workflows.

The key specifications highlighted by Seagate include transfer speeds that allow professionals to move or edit large files quickly, universal compatibility across popular connection standards, and a portable 'adventure-proof' design. These attributes aim to address the needs of content creators whose work frequently takes them outside a fixed post-production facility.

Pricing for the LaCie Rugged SSD4 is set at GBP £139.99 for the 1TB version, GBP £249.99 for the 2TB model, and GBP £449.99 for the 4TB capacity.
